Extended Research

An outline of interdisciplinary collaboration with artists in other disciplines

My works reflect on how I perceive and respond to the great perspective of the individuals, society, universe, time, and space. I’m looking in different scales arrange from microcosmic object to the macroscopic world by using digital paint to create the works with the combination of multiple layers that allow me to compress different objects, speeds, transparency, movements, and spaces together with rich colors in order to engage the viewers to immerse in the fantastic moment of the present regardless of everything will be gone at the end. The artworks are underpinned by theories that refer to a spectrum of combinations of philosophical theories, including Existential Nihilism, Absurdism, Entropy, as well as the phenomenon of biological mechanisms and the movements that were observed and created by myself. Although these theories are independent, their interrelation inspires me to reflect on who I am and the world’s nature.

I use digital paint to create the artworks with multiple layers, which enables me to rethink and work as if I was a music conductor who harmonically instructs many different types of musicians in a symphony orchestra in order to create a wonderful symphony.

As for extended research and development, I plan to create some interdisciplinary artworks by using cutting-edge technology, with artists in other disciplines, such as musician, composer, and dancer. The interdisciplinary cooperation is significant, which enables me to think out of a specific major, thereby more focusing on the essence of art.

Since my works are created by multiple-layers and, I often think of myself as a symphonic conductor. Thus, I can invite some artists in other disciplines to discuss and explore a concentration topic. Then, we can harmonically combine our works together. In the first phase, I review and reflect on my previous experiences with pianist and cellist. We co-created the works and expressed our feelings in different ways, as follows,

In the second phase of development, I outlined a few methods about how to cooperate with other artists in other disciplines and referred to some existing cooperation from others. For example, when I collaborate with a dancer, I propose to use cameras and computer software to target his/her part of the body where it is pre-determined. Then, the software will be able to record and generate the traces of the dancer’s performance and transform the dancer’s performance into visible lines at the end.

The performance of THIS FLOATING WORLD resonates with me. The dancer Jan Lee performed solely on the stage while she was detected by the cameras constantly, then the computer recorded her traces of performance and generated visuals and sound. The second example Thinking with the Body: Becoming comes from Wayne McGregor, who is well known for his physically testing choreography and ground-breaking collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology, and science. The work was informed by the dancers’ performance and algorithm, displaying on a screen that looks like an alien or special creature. Both of these two performances are interactive and time-based. This is a new beginning where I cannot find it in painting that fascinates me.

Sometimes, it’s really hard to find a choreographer who can cooperate with me, especially in Covid-19. Thus, my Plan B is to do it by myself. On the one hand, I’m very interested in choreography and dance, even though I’m a freshman. On the other hand, I’m more familiar with the concepts of what I want to express, so I look forward to using my body and gestures to explore my concentration. I will finish the performance in a dark room by using a long exposure camera to record the performance while my wrist targets a few glow circles. Finally, the picture is a period of compressed time of my performance. Then, I can use software to process and refine my performance traces for the second phase of the creation.
